Work Injuries

An work or occupational injury is bodily damage resulting from working. The most common organs involved are the spine, hands, the head, lungs, eyes, skeleton, and skin. Occupational injuries can result from exposure to occupational hazards (physical, chemical, biological, or psychosocial), such as temperature, noise, insect or animal bites, blood-borne pathogens, aerosols, hazardous chemicals, radiation, and occupational burnout.

While many prevention methods are set in place, injuries may still occur due to poor ergonomics, manual handling of heavy loads, misuse or failure of equipment, exposure to general hazards, and inadequate safety training.

Most common causes of workplace injuries include :
  • Repetitive Motion – Repetitive motion over time can result in painful ailments to the neck, shoulder, arm and wrist as well as problems with your vision. Carpel tunnel syndrome is a well-known example of a repetitive motion injury or cumulative trauma.
  • Machine Injuries – Assembly line, fabrication shop or any production facility workers that use machinery may be injured while operating their machine or station.
  • Overextension – This is one of the most common work-related injuries in Kentucky, and usually occurs when you are in motion, pulling or pushing, lifting or lowering, carrying or moving. Common injuries include torn or severely sprained muscles, tendon and ligament damage and back injuries such as spasms or herniated disks.
  • Vehicles in Motion – This can include operating your own vehicle or company vehicles such as a delivery van or truck, forklifts, tractor-trailers, company cars or other equipment while you are at work.
  • Slip and Fall Injuries – Qualifying slip and fall injuries usually involve some sort of fluid or debris which should not be on the floor. These injuries can be quite severe and include fractured limbs, head injuries as well as soft tissue injuries.
  • Falls and Falling Objects – The most common work-related injuries in this category include falling from a ladder, scaffolding or lift, or products or merchandise which falls from a rack or shelving unit. Falling can result in serious injuries including bone fractures, paralysis and traumatic brain injury or TBI.
  • An assault at work – If you are attacked by a co-worker or employee of a company while at work you may very well qualify for workers compensation for resulting injuries and missed work time.

Most common causes of workplace injuries include :
  • Slips, trips and falls
  • Muscle strains
  • Repetitive strain injury
  • Crashes and collisions
  • Cuts and lacerations
  • Inhaling toxic fumes
  • Exposure to loud noise etc.

Sports Injuries

complains of pain or an injury, the key to a diagnosis is to obtain a detailed history and examination. An example of a format used to guide an examination and treatment plan is a S.O.A.P note or, subjective, objective, assessment, plan. Another important aspect of sport injury is prevention, which helps to reduce potential sport injuries. It is important to establish sport-specific dynamic warm-ups, stretching, and exercises that can help prevent injuries common to each individual sport.

Creating an injury prevention program also includes education on hydration, nutrition, monitoring team members “at risk”, monitoring at-risk behaviors, and improving technique. Season analysis reviews, preseason screenings, and pre-participation examinations are also essential in recognizing pre-existing conditions or previous injuries that could cause further illness or injury. The functional movement screen can assess movement patterns in athletes in order to find players who are at risk of certain injuries. In addition, prevention for adolescent athletes should be considered and may need to be applied differently than adult athletes.

Types of sport injury
  • Soft tissue injuries
  • Hard tissue injuries
  • Overuse injuries
  • Head and neck injuries
Sports Related Musculoskeletal Injuries :
  • Subacromial impingement syndrome is a shoulder joint injury. Injury causes mechanical inflammation in the subacromial space – the space above the shoulder’s ball and socket joint and the top most shoulder bone. Muscular strength imbalances, poor scapula, and rotator cuff tears are the main causes of subacromial impingement syndrome. Falling on an outstretched arm and pulling on the shoulder, repetitive lifting of heavy loads or overhead movement cause rotator cuff tears.
  • Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury: Immediately after injury the subject will fall to the ground, acute swelling sets in, knee is destabilized, and bearing weight becomes a difficulty. Knee injury in contact sports, and jumping, deceleration, and pivoting in non-contact sports and activities cause anterior cruciate ligament injury.
  • Collateral Ligament Injury: an injury to a partially flexed knee can damage the medial collateral ligament – the ligament stretching along the inner edge of the knee. A forceful medial blow to the knee can cause collateral ligament injury. A reduction in range-of-motion and pain are symptoms of collateral ligament injury.
  • Meniscus injuries: acute or repeated injury to the meniscus – the shock absorber of the knee – causes meniscus injuries. A person with meniscus injuries experience difficulty squatting and walking instigates pain.
  • Runner’s knee (Patellofemoral pain): knee joint pain affecting the patellofemoral joint. Pain is a direct consequence of the kneecap rubbing against the end of the thigh bone – “patella” means kneecap and” femur” means a thigh bone. The force the patellafemoral joint has to sustain can be as much as five times the body weight when the knee is fully flexed – when squatting – and three times body weight when the knee flexes to 90 degrees – when climbing stairs.
  • Inversion Ankle Sprain: landing on an uneven surface sprains the ankle. swelling, localized pain, difficulty bearing weight, and limping are signs of inversion ankle sprain.
  • Eversion Ankle Sprain: injury related to the ankle turning outward or rotating externally. A typical symptom of eversion ankle sprain is excruciating pain that worsens with weight bearing
